How Does a French Drain Work?

A French drain is an essential component of foundation protection. It helps prevent moisture problems, rot, water infiltration, and concrete deterioration.

It consists of a system of perforated pipes installed around a building to collect excess water near the foundation and redirect it to a designated drainage point.

In most cases, the French drain surrounds the entire building to provide complete protection.

New construction projects are required to include this water management system, as proper drainage directly contributes to the longevity of a building’s foundation.

French Drain Installation and Replacement

The work begins with the excavation of the foundation area to access the location where the drainage system will be installed. Once excavation is complete, the pipes are placed on a solid, level base of crushed stone.

A slope is incorporated into the system to promote the continuous and natural flow of water.

The pipes are then wrapped in a geotextile membrane that filters soil, sand, clay, and debris. This method allows water to flow freely while preventing dirt and debris from clogging the system.

A layer of crushed stone is then placed over the drain to provide additional protection.

Before backfilling the excavation, a waterproofing membrane may also be installed on the foundation walls to create an extra layer of protection against moisture infiltration.

Our team pays special attention to your property throughout the project. We work diligently to minimize disruption to your landscaping and restore the site once the work is completed.
